How to read a neighbourhood in one weekend

Visit at the wrong time and every street looks perfect. A simple plan for seeing an area as it really is.

How to read a neighbourhood in one weekend

Listings show the flat. Your daily life happens on the street outside. Here is a plan that fits into one weekend.

Friday evening

Do the commute in reverse. Leave your office at your usual time and travel to the building. Note how long it takes and how it feels.

Saturday morning

Walk a ten minute radius. Look for a pharmacy, a grocery store that is open late, a park and a decent place for breakfast. Talk to one shopkeeper and one security guard. Ask what changed in the last two years.

Sunday

Come back at night. Is the street lit? Is it loud? Check the flood maps and look up any planned metro lines or road widening that might affect the building.

Then read the neighbourhood guide on this site and the reviews from residents. Compare notes with what you saw.
